High-Resolution Audio with Direct Stream Digital (DSD)
Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio codec – designed specifically for High-Resolution Audio. This 1-bit format utilises a stream of very high frequency 1s and 0s to recreate audio waveforms at a higher resolution than conventional codecs. The result is clearer, crisper, High-Resolution Audio quality. The STR-DN1060 supports DSD 5.6MHz (2ch) decoding thru USB and network connections, as well as DSD 2.8MHz (up to 5ch) decoding thru HDMI, USB and network.

A native 4K source can be passed directly through to 4K HDMI IN with HDCP2.2. Standard HD resolution can be enjoyed with higher quality and more visible detail thanks to video upscale technology. Previously, only upscale from 1080/24p up to 4K/30p was possible, however for the new STR models there is no limitation for the input video resolution.

Reproducing near studio-quality lossless audio, these advanced high-definition audio formats allow the user to experience multi-channel audio and be immersed in expansive cinema surround sound when viewing movies and music.
Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration
Enjoy immersive movie sound wherever you choose to sit. Advanced Digital Cinema Automatic Calibration (ADCAC) optimises audio performance to ensure well balanced sound. Use the supplied mic to measure the acoustic properties of your room in relation to where you sit, and the position of your speakers. The system adjusts and tunes sound accordingly, eliminating any weak sound spots to establish a wide, natural sound stage.
Sound Optimiser for clear audio at any volume
Enjoy clear, dynamic sound at any volume thanks to a built-in sound optimiser. The A/V receiver automatically measures speaker efficiency and adjusts the frequency response based on audibility. As a result, a rich sound atmosphere is created—even when watching or listening to content at a normal room volume level.
Centre Speaker Lift Up
Centre speakers are typically positioned below the screen, so all centrally located sounds come from below the screen. This feature enables the centre speaker to appear to be located at the position of the screen. The height of the sound from the centre speaker can be raised to a desired height. (This works with actual installed front high speakers.) The centre speaker lift up can be set to 0 (OFF) or between 1 and 10. With a higher setting the centre position is raised, so listeners can customize this function to suit their preferences. This function can be used with A.F.D. mode (which adds no sound field) and movie modes like HD-Digital Cinema Sound, etc.
In-ceiling speaker mode
This feature will virtually re-locate the Front and Centre speakers of the in-ceiling speakers to around the screen. Now the customer will hear their characters' voices coming from the screen instead of the ceiling. This mode also makes music sound more natural and rich in the room with in-ceiling speakers.
HD Digital Cinema Sound®

The STR-DN1060 has Google Cast built in, so you can cast your favourite music apps from your personal device to your speakers. Simply tap the Cast button in a music app on your iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, Mac®, Windows laptop or Chromebook and select a speaker or group of speakers to get started.
Seamless streaming with Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth®
All your music is a simple connection away. Stream your favourite songs wirelessly from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop using Wi-Fi® – there’s no need for cables. Bluetooth® means easy connections, or just tap to pair your compatible device using NFC as well. What's more, AirPlay lets you stream music from your iOS device through the amp to your speakers.
One-touch listening and one-touch mirroring
To start streaming music wirelessly, simply touch your NFC smartphone or tablet against the STR-DN1060 to connect wirelessly. With the combination of NFC One-touch and Bluetooth connection, you can enjoy "one-touch listening" of music you are playing on your smartphone or tablet through the STR-DN1060. Likewise, the combination of NFC One-touch and Wi-Fi connection provides "one-touch mirroring" or Miracast(tm), for viewing of videos on your smartphone or tablet through the amp and onto a TV, with no wireless router required. There are no messy wired connections or complex setup. Even in cases where NFC is not available, connection is possible with manual pairing.
Listen in another room with three zone listening
With third zone listening, you can connect three sets of speakers to the STR-DN1060 and listen to the same audio output across three rooms. The receiver can also control two separate source inputs at once. Select which signal is sent to each listening zone – so you can watch a DVD in your living room and listen to a CD at the same time next door.
Play HD video clips, photo and music while you charge with two MHL ports
The STR-DN1060 is smartphone ready. HD video clips and photos can be viewed on the TV's big screen. Use of phone apps like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google Maps is possible. MP3 music tracks can be played through the receiver. One slim cable links the STR-DN1060 while charging the phone's battery. The TV's and STR’s remote control can be used to control the MHL capable Smartphone as required. Thanks to an additional MHL socket at the rear, a product like Roku can be connected at the same time.

New Pre-amplification volume IC
Newly developed for the STR-DN1060, the pre-amplifier IC CXD90035, completely separates the ground in the IC and draws it outside of the IC. As a result, interference between each stage is eliminated, enabling high stability amplification to realise high-quality sound with rich low frequencies. In addition, the internal amplification circuit's new design improves excess properties and reduces distortion, for sound with a more open and airy feel.
The STR-DN1060 offers improved structural stability for better sound via the analogue signal path. This circuit is located on a glass epoxy board in order to achieve higher speed and power.
Low Phase noise type vacuum sealed precision crystal oscillator
For all clocks for HDMI audio sources, a newly developed low noise type vacuum-sealed precision crystal oscillator achieves a 40% decrease in phase noise from previous typical crystal oscillators. It is strong enough to maintain contact due to its property of adhesion to quartz, even under strong mechanical shocks. Clock signal jitter is drastically reduced by this method, resulting in a clear sound stage with rich and deeper bass.
Jitter Elimination Circuit
For STR-DN1060, an ES type jitter elimination circuit is used for all digital audio sources. It is a combination of carefully tuned analogue and digital PLL circuitry. Unlike the conventional method, the target value is not the input master clock, but the timing reference of a precision crystal oscillator. This analogue PLL has a high cut-off frequency, following the jitter with low timing reference. In addition, the circuit also has a digital PLL, and the input master clock and VCO are compared by this digital PLL.
Localised Analogue Power Supply
The supply-ground path around the devices is voltage regulated locally to ensure that high frequency elements are minimized, thereby reducing electromagnetic radiation from the circuit and keeping the analogue signal path and amplifier circuit noise free. This design delivers an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of digital audio and digital video signals so low frequency sound is more defined, with greater purity and reality.
Sony Tuned Electrical Components
Large sized custom made block electrolytic capacitors are used for the main power supply. Selected audio grade resistors are used in all analogue signal paths. Large sized resistors are used together with the original type at selected critical locations. A bigger sized body offers less impedance drift from any thermal effect caused by current flow. This helps the amplifier to achieve a higher grade of sound imaging.
Premium construction for optimum sound
For optimum audio visual performance, the STR-DN1060 uses the highest quality components and design. The rigid steel chassis uses a frame and beam design to reduce external speaker pressure for more focused sound. All the four corners are embossed to better support the weight of the power transformer and heat sink. The heat sink design maximises air intake into the amplifier circuit, helping to withstand unwanted sound pressure—all combining to deliver powerful, refined sound.
Large Capacity Power Transformer
A process of vacuum varnish achieves flat and even varnishing on internal wiring for the power transformer. Inclusion of both a copper short-ring and steel hum-proof belt around the coil and the core prevents noise leakage. This achieves rich bass and fine reproduction of image detail, plus more powerful bass and lower frequency drive. The level of detail helps deliver more accurate acoustic bass and vocals, offering a new sense of clarity with space.
Heat Sink Design
By studying the fin shape and controlling the uniformity, good and stable sound can be achieved. The amplifier circuit is able to better withstand unwanted sound pressure.
Digital circuit board
The circuit board for the digital stage is secured with strong metal frames to protect the board from speaker sound pressure. This heat sink bracket takes on the duty of shielding the digital circuit from unwanted radiation, and shields the high impedance circuit in the main body from unnecessary noise, thereby realising clearer sound quality.
Second generation ES solder
Years of sound engineering experience and continuous sound testing by Sony helped to create an ES-grade sound quality solder. A high purity tin base is mixed with small amounts of specially chosen metal elements to create a special alloy capable of delivering sound that is responsive and very smooth.
